The crossing from Piombino to Portoferraio takes one hour by the ferries of the Toremar company. Departure times, especially in summer, are frequent and Toremar uses both motor vessels and the hydrofoil: the latter only carries passengers and also stops at Cavo, taking about 40 minutes to reach the port of destination. The ferries have a snack bar, cafeteria and children's entertainment room on board. Seats ensure a comfortable journey.

Portoferraio is the largest town on Elba Island and hosts the main port. Its present-day appearance dates back to 1548, when Cosimo dei Medici fortified it. Later, in 1814, it hosted Napoleon Bonaparte, who made numerous improvements to the internal road system. Its historical centre is, therefore, rich in history and charm. It will be easy to fall in love with this place with its old buildings, its dockyard and its typical restaurants.
